15 Sep 5 fun classroom activities to encourage your pupils to drink more water
HEALTHY DRINK CHOICES ARE IMPORTANT!
If you’ve had chance to download our FREE ‘Healthy drinks, drinks, drinks!’ teachers guide then you’ll know that choosing healthier drinks is a key part of getting a healthy balanced diet as shown on the Eatwell Guide!
We recommend that your pupils monitor their fluid intake using our ‘Weekly drinks diary’! Why not review their choices with these 5 fun and engaging classroom activities:
(1) HEALTHIEST OPTIONS
Use our “Healthy drinks, drinks, drinks!” handout to teach your class about healthy fluid choices. But first, get your pupils to look at the types of drinks they are having! Can they make healthier choices? Carry out a range of quick straw polls (i.e. raise hands) to find out how many of your pupils are having:
- “Red” drinks that are high in sugar and should be avoided (e.g. sports & energy drinks).
- More than one 150ml portion of fruit juice a day.
- Plenty of water every day!
(2) VOLUME OF FLUID
Teaching maths? Look at the volume of fluid your pupils are drinking each day. Discuss whether they are meeting the recommended daily requirements:
- 4 to 8 years old – 1100ml to 1300ml
- 9 to 13 years old girls – 1300ml to 1500ml
- 9 to 13 years old boys – 1500ml to 1700ml
Now ask your pupils to measure, record and compare the volume sizes of different cups, glasses and jugs, as well as looking at serving sizes of cartons, cans and bottles to see how many servings they need to meet the daily fluid requirements for their age.
(3) EATWELL GUIDE
Speak to your class about how their drink choices compare with the advice on our Eatwell Guide handout (make sure you print off one of these for each pupil) as part of a healthy balanced diet!
(4) DRINKING FOR HEALTH
- Younger children may not always be aware of the signs and symptoms of thirst! Speak to your pupils about why it is important to ensure they are drinking plenty, and explain how their body might feel if they are not drinking enough e.g. dry mouth, headache, dark wee, lack of concentration.
- Finish off by talking to your class about how they might need to drink more if it is very hot, or if they are taking part in physical activity where they are sweating more.
(5) How many cups?
- Grab some plastic cups and label them 1 to 8!
- Choose a day of the week, ask your pupils to work out how many cups of drink they had on that chosen day! Ask your pupils to put a marble (or something similar) in the cup displaying their answer (i.e. 8 cups of drink – marble goes in the plastic cup labelled “8”).
- Count up the number of marbles in each plastic cup. Use this information to help your pupils construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams or tables?
- Explain to your class that they should be aiming for 6-8 cups or glasses of healthy fluid a day. You can help your pupils achieve this aim by ensuring they have a water bottle in class and by making sure they take regular fluid breaks in lessons.
- How many pupils in your class are having 6-8 cups or glasses of healthy fluid a day? Ask them to repeat the “Weekly drinks diary” over the next week – they might increase their daily fluid intake after learning about healthy drinks!
